Smart & Clean Design @Lahti
Smart and clean design involves approaches to create user friendly products with lower material and energy consumption. Design can bring added value to the clients and customers through increased material and energy efficiency as well as improved user-friendliness. Therefore, design know-how can boost competitiveness of industry.
Lahti region is one of the most important centers of design know-how in Finland, and it is the most efficient region in utilizing industrial design. In recent years, many successful companies in the region have chosen design as a vital competitive factor and this site visit will provide a first class insight on how to make design a crucial factor enhancing companies' competitiveness. The spear-head of higher education in design is the Institute of Design at Lahti University of Applied Sciences, which is at the apex in the field in Finland and is an internationally renowned school of industrial design.

Depleting natural resources and the climate crisis, call us to find ways to lower consumption and use resources more effectively. The new paradigm, circular economy, aims to decouple the economic growth from the resource consumption by promoting innovation, smart design and co-design, knowledge sharing, and cooperation and collaboration. In the circular economy, nutrients and materials are intentionally designed to cycle in loops, in closed loops, similarly as in nature. Smart cities and regions of the future will no doubt be in the forefront of this change.
In Lahti region, the development industrial symbiosis has been proactive especially in the field of waste management. Regional pioneer companies have constituted an industrial concentration which is named Kujala area. Almost 96 percent of community waste will reuse and recycle in Kujala. This have been made possible to developing an efficient waste sorting system by the company. The first gasification Lahti Energy’s Kymijärvi II power plant in the world is located in Lahti. The plant district heat from Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) and efficiently generate electricity. The raw material of the SRF is energy-containing waste.

During the visit, we will get a change to explore Onnelanpolku service center which is designed for comfortable, safe and accessible living with numerous smart features and services. Center has 130 apartments for elderly residents and 94 assisted living apartments. As facilitators of everyday life, it has lunch cafe, fitness center, club & meeting rooms, dentist's office and outer and inner courtyards for movement, comfort and cultivation.
The site visit will take you also to explore Simulti - a learning environment where social and health care students can adapt their theoretical knowledge to practical learning in safe surroundings. Simulti provides realistic learning environment where students can train and develop their knowledge. Simulation gives feedback and tells how students can enhance their learning. Simulti is a perfect way to learn real life working expectations in a closed simulation.

Active Living @Lahti
With its central location in southern Finland, the Lahti region is a lively regional center with 200,000 people. Lahti is a great place for active living and outdoors fun. All different sports, nature activities, outdoor areas with skiing tracks, the many lakes in the area and comprehensive sports services provide the active individual with options all year long. In addition, there are plenty of natural attractions such as Lake Vesijärvi and the Salpausselkä Ridge.
Lahti is well-known by many national and international culture and sporting events. At the moment, the whole city is looking forward to hosting the Nordic World Ski Championship 2017. The facilities and services of the sport center are located close to each other within walking distance.

Future Factory & Campus@Lahti
A family-owned design and furniture manufacturing company Isku was established in 1928 in Lahti. Over the years, the company has expanded its business also abroad. Still the head office and many sales offices are located in Lahti. Isku is one of the leading designers of work and office facilities, learning environments and care and special accommodation facilities in Finland.
Isku owns a factory hall which holds over 80 496 square meters and Lahti UAS rents 22 500 square meters of the total area. Part of this old factory building is now being transformed into a modern learning environment for Lahti University of Applied Sciences. Lahti UAS is aiming to centralize all its faculties’ learning and research functions into the currently renovated NiemiCampus by 2018. This future campus enables seamless co-operation with different business operators and it is a great example to awake old factory to new use instead of building a totally new campus.

Neloskerros is a cooperative that develops new ways to learn together with Lahti University of Applied Science. They implement a work-based learning model that creates cooperation between students and companies giving benefit to both sides. Neloskerros is working.
M.IDEA is a media office run by students of Lahti University of Applied Sciences. M.IDEA provides a platform to execute courses, projects, internships, theses and exercises. There are six members in the core of M.IDEA, which all have their own field of expertise. All faculties are represented in the team.
Limu Radio, streaming student radio of the Lahti University of Applied Sciences (LUAS) was established in 2013. The operations, musical profile and programs are in the hands of the students who manage all the aspects of the channel and steer it forward. Staff members involved give guidance when needed. The station has over 50 students from different faculties involved, in addition to alumni and students from other educational institutions.
LAMK Entrepreneurship Society (LAMKES) is a student driven association which takes care of student business in Lahti region. The mission of LAMKES is to help students to develop their business ideas and to connect them to the business world. LAMKES organizes various events including inspirational talks, workshops and startup programs to inspire students and cooperate with the business world.
Physiotherapist cooperative Motions is a student driven team which offers wellness services. The business concept is to promote movement which enables to stay healthy and keep on going. The services are customised for each customer.
Showroom Muotsikka is organized by the Institute of Desing and Fine Arts of Lahti UAS. Showroom Muotsikka is a webpage platform to where students add their portfolios during the studies. The idea of the platform is to present the talent of the students.
Open badges are evidence-based and verified digital representations of skills and achievements. Open Badge is an open standard developed by the Mozilla Foundation to recognize, validate and demonstrate learning. An open badge is a digital image with linked metadata. In Lahti UAS, open badges have been utilized mostly as a supplement to the existing credentialing system. Lahti LUAS has employed open badges as a way of recognizing student achievements in a more nuanced way and to signal finer-grained skills. Open badges have also been used for acknowledging the learning and skills of staff members and could also be utilized for acknowledging the skills of clients or partners.
Today's world of work requires expertise and experience. Master's Degree Programmes of universities of applied sciences give students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and expand their professional expertise. They provide graduates with skills needed in demanding specialist and managerial tasks.
The society helps and supports students to start building their entrepreneurship or take a part an entrepreneur society. In NY, a student is able to test his entrepreneurial and team work skills with student driven ideas and with lower risk than starting a real business. This program is available for students in all faculties as well as any part of students’ studies.

Errect Project - Sustainable Product Design & Resource Efficiency @NiemiCampus
The group discussions in the workshop handle companies’ different needs regarding sustainable product design and resource efficiency. The session includes short introductions about industrial symbiosis, resource efficiency & life-cycle assessment, methods & results in companies and corporate responsibility by university experts from Sweden, Finland and Russia.

The session is organized as a part of ERREC – Environmental Responsibility and Resource Efficiency of Companies project. The project is funded by SIU and the Nordic Council of Ministers. The project is implemented during year 2016 by Lahti UAS, ITMO University (RU), NOvSU University (RU) University of Gävle (SWE) and Aalto University (FI).

Time is the most valuable currency we have and knowledge is a tool to salvage it. Obviously, this combination equals money in most circles. Money makes the world go around. The quartal economy is based on growth so it is essential to reduce time waste and gain more knowledge in order to stay competitive in the market. For purely academic, money can be forgotten from the equation since time and knowledge alone are everything.Knowledge is always transferred. This is called learning. Learning can be pretty straightforward as we adapt numerical information from books or be very complex when it comes to abstracting ideologies with various concepts. Of course, there is also physical learning which has its own category. If you're interested in that, let's check out www.haikio.fi to see how we visioned the future of learning in that category. To make it more simple let's categorize knowledge into conscious and tacit and focus on the gray area in between.
There is knowledge that we possess and it is conscious, but since it might be so basic and regular, we hardly pay attention to it. Sharing this knowledge is crucial but can be difficult. Companies solve this problem by having two employees work together for a period of time. The method would be effective if the period is long enough and the knowledge is used frequently. There must be a better way. Let's divide this type of knowledge sharing into smaller parts. The first thing is to recognize that knowledge, for example, a reaction to a certain situation. The second phase is to collect the knowledge of these actions. This happens naturally when two people are working in the same space. We want to remove the need for this co-working period, which means we have to recognize this knowledge, collect it and share it. It can be a process. It can be a program. Probably both. Impossible? -Sure.
