FHINK was first presented this year at the SaloneSatellite, Milan Furniture Fair, in Italy. SaloneSatellite is among the most respected design events. Every year SaloneSatellite invites selected design universities to present new talent to the design community at large.
This year our students and alumnus present the 2018 edition of progressive design solutions selected by awarded designers Mikko Laakkonen and Timo Ripatti. Both Laakkonen and Ripatti are Finnish designers making an international career. The focus of our showcase is, once again, in making everyday better and more meaningful. Many of the showcased products have been recognized by the industry and have won awards at design competitions and exhibitions. For example, Riippu – a hanging shelf system by Samuli Helavuo is in production by Hakola and sold at high-end design stores such as Artek.
The following showcase comprises of 15 works, from a five year timeframe, that speaks of our values, our design education direction, and present Finnish thinking and design of tomorrow. This years theme of Finnish thinking is visible also through the exhibition design, designed by our students from interior architecture and graphic design programmes. This Fall the school is moving to a new campus, where cross-disciplinary work is encouraged, and where
new learning methods are supported.
At our stand we will also hold a book launch Student designs – Furniture from four decades, authored by Kaarle Holmberg, Senior Lecturer of Furniture Design and Interior Architecture, together with Kristiina Soini-Salomaa. The book shows the history of furniture design education at the Institute of Design. It provides context for the young talents presenting today.
