Regional circular economy models and best available technologies for biological streams

BIOREGIO desires to influence resource efficient economy policies and to enhance biobased circular economy. BIOREGIO will also share expertise about the best available technologies and cooperation models. The five-year-long project started in January 2017. BIOREGIO is financed by European Regional Development Fund through the Interreg Europe program and lead by Lahti University of Applied Sciences.

Through BIOREGIO, the collective knowledge will increase the recycling rates of the biological streams, such as food waste/biowaste, municipal and industrial sludge and agricultural residues, which can be processed with similar technologies. These best available technologies and models include, for instance, bio refinery, biogas production, and relevant cooperation models, e.g. ecosystems, networks and administrative cooperation towards closing the loops of the biological streams.

As a result, the BIOREGIO partner regions will be better equipped to develop relevant regional policies supporting circular economy with a focus on closing the biological loops. Moreover, the project outcomes will contribute to an inevitable transition towards a greater and more sustainable use of biological resources in the whole EU.
