04ENG503 PRESENTATION SKILLS 3 ECTS

Learning objectives
The student
- knows how to prepare and deliver a convincing presentation in English both individually and in pairs or groups
Contents
- oral communication: non-verbal and verbal
- pronunciation, intonation and word stress
- planning and structuring a presentation eg in the following areas: Finland as a market area, business presentation, describing trends, marketing an event
- use of visual materials
- presentation techniques
- language of presentations

04ENG02 BUSINESS CONTACTS 3 ECTS

Learning objectives
The student
- understands the requirements of effective corporate communication
- manages in different kinds of communication situations both orally and in writing
Contents
- exchanging messages in the new networked business environments
- customer contacts face-to-face and ear-to-ear
- modern written corporate communication: terms of business, inquiries, quotations, orders, shipping and invoicing, documents needed in international trade.

Learning objectives
The student
- learns to use English language news sources on the Net
- will be able to analyze and interpret information from the news sources
- will understand the basics of writing news stories
- will understand the concept of key words
- will understand the difference between news stories, feature stories, and opinion pieces
- will understand the concept of headlines
- will be able to compose headlines
Contents
The anatomy of news stories, evaluating news stories, connotation vs denotation of words, identifying key words for various topics, basics of writing.

04ENG18 MEETINGS AND NEGOTIATIONS 3 ECTS

Learning objectives
The student
- will understand the difference between formal and informal meetings
- will learn the phraseology and procedures of meetings
- will learn to compile meeting documents (notice, agenda and minutes)
- will learn to participate in meetings as a member and as a Chair
- will learn to negotiate effectively
- will understand how cultural differences can impact meetings
Contents
In this very practical course, the students learn the languages, verbal, written and body, of formal and informal meetings and negotiations. In addition to taking part in many negotiation situations, the students will be expected to learn the skills of writing agendas, minutes and notices for meetings.

04ENG513 COUNTRIES AND CULTURES 3 ECTS

Learning objectives
The student
- is aware of the existence of different cultures and the effect these cultures have on the national ways of thinking in different parts of the world
- understands how this might affect the carrying out of business in intercultural business relations.
Contents
Cultures of so-called Western Civilization more specifically. Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and the Americas, their cultural backgrounds, ways of thinking and ways of doing business. The course is comprised of the following topics:
- land, country and climate
- human development and the development of culture
- roots of Western Civilization
- modern cultures of the Middle East, Orthodox world, Greeks and Slavs, Latin Europe, Northern Europe and Britain and Ireland
- modern cultures of Sub-Saharan Africa, Indian subcontinent, East Asia, Latin America, North America

04ENG22 POWER COMMUNICATION 3 ECTS

Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to give the participants an idea of how to be persuasive in demanding situations of business interaction. The focus is on developing the participants’ professional communicative competence in problem situations. Other areas discussed include creative writing, reporting and briefing and contracts.
Contents
Persuasive communication in situations when you are unable to quote or supply, you are unable to order, you have to make a complaint or reply to one or, when your customer does not pay. Creative writing, eg advertisements, sales letters, reporting and briefing (abstracts, summaries) and the language of contracts are also part of the course.

04ENG28 FINANCIAL ENGLISH 3 ECTS

Learning objectives
The main aim of the course is to give students specializing in financial management tools for managing tasks involving the special language of accounting and finance.
Contents
The course focuses on the following main areas:
- corporate reporting: accounting and financial statements, company performance
- corporate finance and investment: equity and debt financing, other financial instruments, e.g. futures and derivatives.

04ENG26 CULTURE & COMMUNICATION & BUSINESS 3ECTS

Learning objectives
The student will understand and become aware of how a country's culture will influence national and individual mode of thinking, behaving, and communicating in different environments including the business environment. The individual learner is the focus of this course.
The student will
- understand the term 'culture' and become aware of the different definitions and concepts behind the term
- understand and appreciate the underlying and defining reasons behind cultural differences
- become aware of the cultural differences in various parts of the world and understand how these distinctions and special characteristics influence each culture's national mode of thinking and influence the ways in which people interact and communicate individually and in the business world
-be provided a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the cultures, customs, and economies of selected countries and regions in the world
