Information Technology Programme of a high level
Chinese Yue Zhou appreciates the educational system in Finland.
- My name is Yue Zhou and this autumn I will start my third year at Lahti University of Applied Sciences. I am from Chengdu, China. Swimming and listening to music are my daily hobbies.
What do you study in Lahti?
- My degree programme is Business Information Technology (BBA). Generally, the programme aims at helping the students to gain abilities to cooperate both in the business field and IT field. My studies concentrate more on application development and information systems. In addition, I got the chance to study some basics about business for example, financing, statistics, economics etc.
How did you find your way to Lahti University of Applied Sciences?
- Finland is highly developed in its education system and everyone can get the same chance to get free education here. Information technology here is top of the world. I took the entrance exam with teacher Maija Romo in Beijing in the summer of 2007. After that I got the entrance permit from our university.
To whom would you recommend Degree Programme in Business Information Technology?
- To people who are interested in applying information technology in business field and are eager to learn by practical cases. Because “learning by doing” is the spirit of our degree programme.
What has been the most interesting part in your studies?
- For me there are a lot of interesting things, for example, applying theories learned to some small projects and tasks. But the most interesting part was participating in an intensive IT course together with students from Spain, Germany and UK. It gave me some practice in new web technology like VoiceXML as well as experience of user interface design. In addition, I gained some experience in cooperating with different people in the program and we enjoyed the time together. And, this programme was meant for everyone whose studies were related to IT. Everyone can apply for it.
What are the best things in Lahti and in Finland?
- In my point of view, the best things in Finland are winter skating, salmiakki and ruisleipä. Finland is a really nice place. In winter there are a lot of winter sports like skating, skiing, ice hockey etc. In summer there are delicious berries, fantastic forests with birds.
- In Lahti, the harbour and beach might be the best choice for summer time. And our Lahti University of Applied Sciences provides students different opportunities for studying in addition to excellent guidance from teachers. So come and enjoy life in Finland, in Lahti!
Tell us something about your practical training.
- I just started my practical training with Hartwall. It’s a large beverage company. They are now applying TPM in Lahti and a massive amount of documents are needed to be managed, so an information system with application and simple user interface are needed to be developed. This is why I am there. In addition to using the knowledge learnt at school, I have already started to touch on areas which are completely new for me like TPM processes and so on.
What do you think about your future?
- In the near future, in both the practical training period and school time followed by it I will still keep up the learning by doing.I hope I will graduate in two years.
