Studies

The core in the Degree Programme in Hotel and Restaurant Management is in business skills in small and medium-sized enterprises. The basic studies help the student to develop professionally and give a clear picture of service as business policy and economic thinking as part of activities in a successful company. The professional studies widen the student’s view of tourism as a line of business and of lodging and hospitality enterprises as its central parts. In specialization studies the student deepens his/her view of business skills in the industry.

The student who has graduated from the Degree Programme in Hotel and Restaurant Management knows the general and special features of the industry. He/she manages the figures in the industry and understands the importance of human resources in service sector. The student learns the international nature of the industry either by working with incoming guests or learning other cultures either through student exchange or by doing an industrial placement abroad.

Teaching methods and open learning environment tend to encourage and activate the student. The student will develop a positive attitude, social and good behaviour and communication skills. Applying, critical, persistent, future-oriented and investigating approach to work is emphasized from the very beginning.

Degree Programme in Hotel and Restaurant Management has two lines of study: Hotel Management and Restaurant Management. Skills for managing daily operations, developing hotel and restaurant concepts and maintaining long-term profitability are the main topics in the studies. The focus in advanced special studies is on multiple skills required in running SMEs. Further, the student can enhance his/her skills by including in free choice studies units from other lines of studies, such as soft adventure tourism, event and conference management. Part of the studies can be conducted in international environment, in partner universities or as project studies in one’s one company or job.

Competences in the Degree Programme

The steps of professional development are defined by competences, combinations of the student’s knowledge, skills and attitude. Competence describes qualification, performance potential and professional and technical skills. Industry-oriented competences improve the sensibility of studies and intelligibility of the degree programme, which develops to a logically advancing continuum providing the students with basis for professional development.

Lines of Studies

Hotel Management
In this line option the focus is on planning and production of services for accommodation establishments. The student understands the importance of daily activity reports. Food, event and programme services are also studied as well as relationship marketing and loyal customer programme.

Restaurant Management
In this line option the focus is on production of food and beverage services. Product mix and product development in a certain business concept are highlighted as well as relationship marketing and loyal customer programme. Event and programme services are also studied.
