Nursing education teaches students to use nursing to help clients and patients in collaboration with other professionals in social and health care. Clients and patients include people of all ages from newborns to the elderly, likewise their families and significant others. Students learn to implement nursing which promotes and maintains health, prevents illness, heals, alleviates suffering and rehabilitates. Nurses help patients and their families to face sickness, crisis, invalidity and death, when there is a need for professional support for mental, physical and social problems. The patients’ families and others may be a source of strength to the patient or may themselves need support. What nurses do is governed by values, ethical principles and regulations. Due to the nature of nursing, psychological assessment is used to ensure that applicants are suitable.

As their studies progress students develop their people skills, ethical base, critical faculty and knowledge of cultures. Studies also make it possible to learn to direct oneself and one’s group, likewise provide skills to influence the further development of nursing. The acquisition of quality professional skill requires that students be capable of applying research findings critically and of constantly seeking up-to-date information. In addition to sound all-round expertise, focal areas include family nursing, social and health care entrepreneurship and capability for catastrophe and crisis work.
Some Professional Studies (nursing) are implemented applying Problem Based Learning (PBL). Studies are pursued in small groups in which the students under tutorial supervision may define the learning tasks required for a certain patient’s case and seek information using a wide variety of sources. The small group then processes the jointly acquired information and the understanding gained about the situation. In small groups students criticise, gain new insights from one another, learn about problem-solving and working together. Learning is supplemented by in a varied manner with written assignments, seminars, lectures by experts and demonstrations of different kinds of expertise and knowledge. Teachers assigned to each new student group (general tutors) direct the general progress of studies, the preparation of practice paths and practical arrangements. Some studies are taken over the Net.
In addition to the construction of a theoretical foundation, studies also include supervised practical training in the social and health care service system. Treatment measures are learned in the classroom situation in what are known as skills workshop sessions. Nursing students may take clinical studies in primary health care (for example a health centre), in specialist nursing (for example a central hospital), in the social and health care learning centre Optiimi, in social and health care organisations, in institutions for research and treatment and in the private sector. Students are encouraged to go on international exchange in the course of their studies, when they will experience novel vistas in nursing and multiculturalism. There is a student society which safeguards the interests of students, supports new students and arranges recreational activities.
Basic studies prepare students for higher education, for the operating environment of the profession and for the acquisition of study skills. They equip students with communicative skills in both the official languages of Finland and in one foreign language. The credit requirement is 210 ECTS credits (hereinafter OP), of which supervised clinical studies account for 86 op (75 op + 11 op of skills workshop training). One OP is taken to represent 25-30 hours of work on the part of the student. The recommended duration of studies is 3.5 years.
