Definition
Development work is based on an applied research and a scientific approach. It aims at the innovations which promote especially welfare, economic and cultural life in Päijät-Häme region and internal development at Lahti University of Applied Sciences.
General definition
Research and development means systematic action to increase the amount of information and to apply received information to find new applications and to solve practical problems. Criterion for research and development is to pursue to find or to produce something that is not only new but also consequential.
Research and development include
Fundamental research characteristic of which is to find new information without direct tendency to practical goals or applications. It aims to verify hypotheses, to find and to explain conformities to law and to formulate theories by analyzing properties, structures, causalities and effects.
Applied research which means searching for individual scientific information which is based on the results of fundamental research. Its goal is to search for new applications or to find new methods to solve practical problems.
Development which means practical development work which is based on a scientific approach and the findings of the research. It aims to develop new products, means of production and processes and to develop services or to improve the existing ones.
Research and development exclude
- proceedings that require expertise such as customer services and, principally, commissions and in this respect required information in general terms. These are for example experimentation, proof, testing and quality control such as market research;
- creating a commercial product which involves designing a prototype after which it is manufactured and modified;
- making data processing applications and Internet applications such as system design, programming and web applications related with producing and maintaining data system and
- administrative and organizational development of the university of applied sciences which backs up carrying out the basic tasks, and preparing inquiries or developing programs that concern development.
