1. Study Programmes
Professional higher education degree equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree:
BACHELOR OF CULTURE AND ARTS / Music pedagogue and Musician
Duration of the studies: 4,5 years
Credits: 270 ECTS
The academic year September 3, 2012 – May 31, 2013
Specialisation lines:
- Musician
- Musical Theatre (tuition in Finnish)
- Music Educator: instrument or voice (tuition in Finnish)
- Early Childhood Music Education (tuition in Finnish)
Language of instruction
Good Finnish language skills are required for the Musical Theatre, Music Educator and Early Childhood Music Education specialisation lines.
Good english language skills (both written and spoken) are required for the Musician specialisation line.
Many courses where instruction is not officially available in English can be taken in other ways agreed between the examiner and the student.
As a proof of language skills we require:
TOEFL - High/Good in all categories
IELTS - Band 7, Good user
Musician specialisation line
The musician specialisation line will admit new students from anywhere in the world. Good English language skills (both written and spoken) are required.
The specialisation line prepares the student for a career as a performing musician on a professional level.
The studies include for example main instrument studies, orchestra (for orchestral instruments) and ensemble playing including practical training as well as basics in solfège, music theory, music history and thesis.
2. Students and staff
The Institute of Music and Drama started in the autumn of 1999. Every year, we enrol 40 new students plus some 20 adult students. The Faculty has around 200 students.

3. Costs
Tuition is provided free of charge, but students have to meet their own living expenses (food, accommodation etc.) and to buy all the educational material themselves.

4. Entrance requirements
The applicants must satisfy both academic and musical requirements. Good english language skills are required.
All the applicants are expected to have necessary musical skills and one of the following:
- the completion of the Finnish upper secondary level education or Matriculation Examination
- International Baccalaureate / Reifeprüfung / the European Baccalaureate
- the completion of a vocational education programme at the school level on the desired main field of study (diploma)
- the corresponding studies abroad leading to higher education eligibility
Applicants without formal qualifications but with exceptional artistic talents may also be accepted.
5. Application period
The application period is March 5 - April 3, 2012.

Please complete the form and return the signed application by regular mail to the Lahti University of Applied Sciences, Institute of Music and Drama, Svinhufvudinkatu 6 F-G, 15110 Lahti, FINLAND.
6. Entrance examination
All applicants to the Institute of Music and Drama must audition on their main instrument or voice.
The entrance examination will be held 22-24th of May 2012 in the Institute of Music and Drama, Lahti.
The candidates selected for the audition will receive a letter of invitation with detailed information about the audition date and time. The letter will be mailed at the latest 4th of May 2012.
If the applicant wishes to make use of the Institute’s accompanists, this should be mentioned on the application form. Remember to enclose music for the accompanist.
At the examination, the applicants must present official proof of their identity.
In special circumstances the foreign candidates unable to attend the entrance examination in person may audition by video recording (VHS and S-VHS tapes or DVD only). In these cases the applicants coming from outside EU must also send certification of english language skills both written and spoken (we accept for example TOEFL).
The entrance examination consists of three parts:
I Written test in music theory, solfège, and general knowledge of music
II Main instrument audition
The applicant will perform a set of compositions to demonstrate his/her technical and musical standard. Candidates are required to prepare and perform three (3) contrasting compositions: an etude, one larger composition or a movement from a larger work, and a third piece of their own choice. At least part of the program must be performed from memory. The audition time is 15 minutes.
III Interview and english language test:
The interview assesses the applicant’s general suitability and motivation. English language skills are tested with the interview and with a small written test.
Students are selected on the basis of their performance in entrance examination only, grades in earlier certificates or diplomas are not taken into account.
If the jury decides to accept the candidate on the basis of the video recording, the official confirmation will depend on a successful live audition and an interview at the Institute of Music and Drama on your arrival in Finland.

7. Announcement of results
The applicants who have been admitted will receive written notification of the results. The students admitted have to return the signed confirmation of acceptance to the Institute of Music and Drama.
