Bus


The hub of the local bus transport is the market square: all of the Lahti area buses stop there.

  • A single ticket costs 3,00 € for journeys of up to 6 km, from 6 to 12 km it costs 3,50 €; single tickets are sold by the bus drivers, no exact change is required.
  • Multiple tickets for 40 journeys cost 80,50 € (<6 km) and 87,90 € (6-12 km) 
  • Multiple tickets for 20 journeys cost 40,20 € (<6 km) and 44,00 € (6-12 km); multiple tickets are valid for one year. 
  • A monthly pass costs 53 €, it's valid for 30 days and entitles to any number of journeys within the City of Lahti area.
  • A transfer ticket, which costs 1,50 €, entitles you to transfer to another bus in one hour within the City of Lahti area
  • Between 23.00 and 04.00 the night rate applies: it is twice the regular price.

When buying a multiple ticket or a pass for the first time, a deposit of 6,50 € is charged for the card. This deposit will be returned to you if you return your card to the selling office.

Tickets are sold at the bus station and at one of the kiosks on the market place (marked with yellow and blue colours and the letter R).

Taxi


Taxis (taksi) can be hailed in the street, ordered by telephone or boarded at a taxi stand. When a taxi is available, the yellow sign on its roof is lit up. Taxi stands in the city centre can be found at Railway Station, Bus Station, Market Square, Hansa and City Hospital.

Driving


Most foreign driver's license holders may drive in Finland on their national driving license for one year. Scandinavians are permitted to drive as long as they have a valid driver's license. After six months you are eligible for a Finnish license. For more information, contact the local police station.

In Finland one drives on the right. Headlights must be used all the time outside built-up areas. Wearing seat belts is compulsory, front and back. Special winter tires are compulsory from November to March.

Arrival to Lahti

Arrival from Helsinki
Most international flights to Finland arrive at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (about 80 km from Lahti). It is also possible to arrive by ferry from Stockholm, Rostock, or Tallinn to Helsinki. There are direct trains from Moscow and St. Petersburg to Lahti.

There is a long-distance bus connection to Lahti from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport every hour on the hour from early in the morning till late in the evening; follow the 'Express buses' directions to a bus platform number 1, a blue bus sign, right in front of the International Terminal, Arrival Hall 2 on the ground floor. You don't need to have a ticket in advance; it can be bought from the driver.

Arrival from Tampere
Some international flights arrive to Tampere- Pirkkla Airport (about 130 km from Lahti).
From Tampere you have two options to travel to Lahti.

There is a long-distance bus or train to Lahti from Tampere city. To catch either of these this you need to take a bus from the Pirkkala - Airport to city centre.

Long-distance bus connection from Tampere bus station to Lahti run every hour from the early morning till 21:30 in the evening. You don't need to have a ticket in advance; it can be bought from the driver.

Train journey from Tampere to Lahti takes about 1 hour 45 min.

Try to arrive on a weekday during office hours (8.00 - 16.00). Please, inform the Faculty Coordinator of your scheduled arrival date and time well in advance so that you can be met at the bus or railway station in Lahti.

 

If you arrive at other times you should be prepared to arrange your own housing until the next weekday if no student tutor has been arranged to meet you. The first person to contact at Lahti University of Applied Sciences is the Faculty Coordinator at the Faculty of your study.
