Study guide 2018-2019

The Degree in International Business Development is intended for people who wish to develop their professional knowledge, skills, and competences of leadership, strategic management, innovation and process and project management in an international business context.

Many of the students can immediately apply their learning directly in their work place or to expand possibilities to bridge business beyond the local markets. These studies provide an excellent possibility to improve your spoken and written English skills in order to work in an international role by practicing and working in a multicultural environment.

Applicants are required to have at least a bachelor-level degree which supports continued studies in their chosen master's degree programme as well as a minimum of three year's work experience in the field of the degree.

A Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, engineering or other business-related bachelor-level degrees are the most appropriate for the foundation work for the Master's Degree Programme in International Business Management. Applicants from other fields of expertise are qualified for the programme, if they have gained sufficient business skills through their professional role prior to starting their master's degree.

Work experience

At least three years of work experience after undergraduate graduation is required. The work experience needs to be obtained by 31 July 2018. The only kind of work experience accepted is one of which you have been given a testimonial by your employer. Entrepreneurship is accepted as work experience if you can provide a certificate of it given by a designated authority (in Finland i.e. a testimonial of YEL or MYEL insurance).

A part-time job is converted into full-time so that 150 hours or 20 full-length working days (at least 7 hours per day) are equivalent to one month. The work experience does not have to be continuous or obtained under the same employer. Work placement or practical training are not counted towards work experience if they are included in the degree used in admission. Military service, non-military service or child-care leave are not counted towards work experience.

English language requirements

A solid command of English is required.

The following applies only non-EU citizens:

Suggested: The certificate of language skills: TOEFL or IELTS or proof of a bachelor's or master's degree conducted in English in an EU/ETA country or one of the following countries: United States of America, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

At the beginning of their studies, each student will complete a personalized learning plan consisting of 60 ECTS of Masters level studies and 30 ECTS of their Final Thesis work. In addition to the courses offered through the program, the student may register for additional elective credits to help shape and customize their learning plan to better fit with their learning objectives.

The duration of the program is expected to be from 1.5 to 2.5 years. The course work is flowed so that by combining online courses and contact courses it is possible to complete the courses in one year. This supports students which would like to be on study leave or have a more intensive experience.

Contact days are usually limited to 2 to 3 days per month. Occasionally intensive seminars will be scheduled to accommodate an international guest lecturer or a seminar. There is plenty of challenging independent work, and on-line studies in order to accommodate busy people’s professional and personal lives. The studies are rigorous, intensive, but manageable.

The language of the program is English. We are integrating some of the contact days with the Finnish Program’s (YAMK) courses to create a more international environment for everyone and it is a great way to network.

Innovative International Expertise is integrated into our approach to creating new professional capabilities. At LUAS, we have created a Masters School platform that allows students to move between business, social and healthcare, technology and design. This form of integration supports multi-disciplinary thinking. Additionally, our work with the FUAS Alliance (LUAS, Laurea and HAMK) allows our students to access a wide range of international symposia, courses, international networks, seminars and projects. We encourage our students to participate in students exchange and training opportunities.

We will assess prior course work and prior work experience to determine if they qualify for academic credit in your degree or as additional elective study.

Learning methods

Study methods include cooperative learning processes, independent work, contact lessons, e-learning, seminars and a research-oriented development project  (30 ECTS) leading to a master's thesis. A part of the studies can be offered in co-operation with the other Master's Degree Programmes of Lahti University of Applied Sciences and Federation of Universities of Applied Sciences (FUAS).

Tuition, living expences and insurances

Tuition fees
Books and other studying materials, travel, accommodation and living expenses must be covered by the student. To obtain the residence permit, foreign students have to make a bank deposit of at least 6720 euros for each year of studying to cover their living costs in Finland and prove they have health insurance for the duration of their studies in Finland.

Students from outside the EU/EEA countries are not covered by the Finnish national health insurance. It is highly important that these students have sufficient insurance cover of their own before their arrival in Finland.
