Jewellery and Object Design
Degree Programme in Design
Specialisation Line in Applied Art
The primary objective of Jewellery and Object Design is to provide the student with competence in designing and creating jewellery and other precious metal objects through craft and problem-solving skills. A jewellery designer or silversmith can build a career through self-employment or as an artist, or find employment in industry, small businesses or corporations.
Major subject studies include jewellery design and silversmithing, computer-aided design, working with precious metals, such as gold and silver, engraving and special techniques.
Studies consist of Lahti Polytechnic and Institute of Design basic studies, degree programme basic studies, specialisation line studies and elective studies.
Advanced studies and the thesis are related to the student’s specialisation line, and if so desired, can be combined into a 20-credit unit. The degree also includes 20 credits of professional practice, half of which is earned through participating in supervised business co-operation workshop projects, and half through internships in jewellery and silversmithing businesses in Finland and abroad.
