Interior architects are professionals in the design of built immediate environment, who contribute to the design processes in building. Their tasks are closely related to architecture, spatial and product design. Traditionally, interior architects have brought to building projects both their spatial and furniture design skills. The most important co-operation partners in design projects include architects, structural designers, electrical designers and mechanical engineers.

The aim of the major subject studies is to provide students with the basic professional competence needed in interior architecture. Gaining such competence requires a practical and aesthetical mindset and visual and creative talent. The objective of the education is to provide students with competence in spatial comprehension, presentation techniques and design. To accomplish this and to gain success in their profession, students need a willingness and ability to constantly look for new information on human behaviour, environment and culture.

The fields of operation include interior and furniture design, general and consumer information as well as education and commerce. Tasks include the design of functional, purposeful spaces, material and colour choices, lighting design, selecting loose furniture (such as tables and chairs) and designing built-in furniture. Interior architects design both private and public spaces. They work in design agencies, trade and industry, public institutions and offices, in the media or as self-employed consultants in building industry.
