Graphic Design

Degree programme in visual communication

The job of a graphic designer combines art and communication. Their works are a manifest part of our visual culture and communications industry and possess cultural and environmental significance and influence.

Information technology has strongly intervened in visual communications and made the designer`s desk digital. Instead of being mere instruments, computers are also media. The graphic designer`s job has become more varied. Their tools and equipment can range from a pencil to multimedia software, and assignments from making a single image to large-scale communicative compilations.

Yet the development of perception and handicraft, visual expression, vision, style and aesthetic thought remains important in the education of a graphic designer, in addition to various professional and technical skills. Increased attention is being paid to the content of communication and reinforcing the students’ conceptual skills.

As a professional in visual communication, a successful graphic designer should possess a sound general knowledge, creativity, artistic talent and communication skills. Varied assignments and a fast-paced work require self-motivation, flexibility and teamwork skills, as well as good stress management.

Graphic designers work in publishing as graphic designers, illustrators and layout designers in advertising and design agencies, publishing houses and magazines. In marketing communications, graphic designers participate in the design of corporate graphics and advertising, designing logos, brochures, posters, labels and packages and participating in the design and supervision of campaign and TV advertising.

In information graphics, designers make traffic signs, guides, exhibitions, visual systems and user interfaces. In cultural communications, designers find jobs in cultural institutions such as museums, organisations and public offices. Graphic designers increasingly participate in new media productions, contributing to the design of digital communication, information networks and interactive media.

Graduates may also find work as self-employed designers and artists in illustration, comic strips, animation or multimedia, or as teachers.
