History

The Institute of Design was founded in 1899 as the East-Häme Agricultural College. The Institute went through various directional changes both educationally and nominally, and received its present structure when Helsinki School of Goldsmithing (founded in 1938) became part of it, in 1971. At the time, and until 1979, the Institute of Fine Arts was part of the Institute of Design. Presently the Institutes are once again closely related through Lahti University of Applied Sciences.
