Complementary competence options

Complementary competence, Bachelor's degree programmes (beginning in autumn 2017)

Complementary competence refers to in-depth or broad-based competencies which students can focus on in order to personalise their degrees. The combined credit load of complementary studies is 30-75 ECTS credits depending on the programme. Complementary studies are primarily taken as modules rather than individual courses. A description of complementary competence is provided in a separate complementary competence curriculum document (LATO17). Students may also choose from the core competence offerings of other degree programmes as applicable. Not all complementary modules are offered every year, and the offering is subject to change.

In summary, students can choose their complementary modules from the following offerings:

  • complementary competence modules offered jointly or by individual faculties Complementary competence courses taught in English, Bachelor's Degree, 17S- curriculum
  • pathway studies: Service Design, Startup Activities, Circular Economy I-III from Complementary competence courses taught in English, Bachelor's Degree, 17S- curriculum

Bachelor's degree programmes which have started before autumn 2017

In previous curricula, degree programmes included two types of elective (optional) studies aimed at developing in-depth and broad-based professional competencies.

Optional Professional Studies

The minimum combined credit load of optional professional studies is 30 ECTS credits in all degree programmes started in the period between autumn 2014 and spring 2017. Students can elect optional professional studies from the offerings of other faculties. In this case, the student attends a course delivered by the faculty in question. Optional professional studies are also organised jointly by the faculties and/or as pathway studies.

Elective Studies

The minimum combined credit load of elective studies is 10-15 ECTS credits in all degree programmes. Students can select courses from the offerings of Lahti UAS faculties as well as those of other HEIs.
