General Information
The Lahti Institute of Fine Arts was founded on January 2nd 1971 as the Lahti Fine Arts College. At this time, the school included two lines of studies, design and fine arts, and was owned by the City of Lahti. Later on, the departments of applied arts were transferred to the state-owned Institute of Design, whilst the Institute of Fine Arts remained with the city of Lahti.
Lahti University of Applied Sciences has brought together again the fine and applied arts, and promotes the interaction between them. The expansion of the artist’s activities beyond the traditional boundaries of fine arts requires the modification of the structure and contents of art studies too. A broad course-based polytechnic offers good possibilities for the development and undertaking of experimental study programmes, which combine with more traditional lines of vocational and general education.
Fourteen students are admitted annually to the Lahti Institute of Fine Arts and the number of courses in all four-year courses totals forty-eight. In addition to regular instruction, the Institute arranges continuing and further education courses in fine arts.
The first and second year courses are common to all students. During this year special attention is given to the development of students’ personal goals. Students are assisted in exploring their most suitable forms of expression and working methods.
After the second year the students choose their major line of studies, from Painting, Sculpture, Graphics and Extended Media. It is also possible to take courses from the other lines of studies within the curriculum. A student whose main area of interest lies beyond the boundaries of the traditional fine art based methods could have Extended Media as his or her major. In such cases the curriculum is individually designed to include combinations of courses from the entire educational programme range.
In addition to the courses offered by the Institute, any student may choose to attend courses offered by the other institutes and faculties within Lahti University of Applied Sciencess. Special permission may be granted for the transfer of credits taken in other universities and institutes of higher education, and could be separately applied for.
